I started riding motorcycles at the age of 18
But the obsession began long before I ever turned a key.
One afternoon, while visiting a friend, I stopped dead in my tracks in his bedroom. On the wall hung a massive poster of a Kawasaki Z1300 — one of those unforgettable classic machines. I didn’t understand engines or horsepower back then, but I didn’t need to. I stood there, completely mesmerized, knowing I wanted something like that in my life.
When the time finally came to buy my own motorcycle, I knew exactly what I wanted: a Honda CB500 Four. The Z1300 was well beyond my budget, but this felt close enough. I didn’t know much about performance or mechanics — but four exhaust pipes had to mean more magic. In my young mind, more pipes simply meant more power.
My family, however, had other ideas. They felt it would be wiser — and safer — for me to start small. A friend of my late mother, Pete, well known in the biking community at the time, stepped in and introduced me to a Honda CG125.
One cylinder. One exhaust pipe.
I was not impressed.
Pete gave me a quick five-minute crash course, and minutes later I was riding around the neighbourhood. And just like that, everything changed. Once I got moving, the doubts disappeared. I couldn’t stop smiling. I was hooked.
Looking back now, that moment wasn’t just about learning how to ride. It was the beginning of a lifelong relationship with two wheels — one that would grow through countless rides and the privilege of owning some incredible motorcycles, including superbikes like the Kawasaki GPZ 1100.
And like many great journeys, it started small.
